Competitions

This is what we're all here for: an opportunity to show off our skills and our love for dance with the world. While competing is not required, it is definitely an invaluable experience that will elevate your dance to the next level. We'll help you prepare weeks in advance so that you shine on the floor!

We don't mean to brag, but... our team's pretty great. Visit the Results Archives to see placements and team stats from past competitions.

Rock 'n Roll Tide Ballroom Competition

When hosting our competition, we follow USA Dance rules.

The University of Alabama hosts a competition in the spring semester, and we invite all teams from across the Southeast to compete.

For our competition, we limit dancers to competing in two consecutive levels in each style. (Note: The newcomer/pre-bronze division is for competitors who have been competing for less than two semesters.) Costumes are welcome at all levels!

Stay tuned for more information regarding Rock 'n Roll Tide Spring 2024!

Judging

The skating system is a unique judging system to DanceSport. Follow the link to read details from World DanceSport Federation.

Structure

Each dance or set of dances to be competed in are organized by rounds, also called heats. Depending on the size of the competition, there may be up to four heats. After the judges recall couples from the first round through the semifinals, the remaining couples (anywhere between 5-8) are ranked according to the skating system.

Attire

Competitors should be prepared with their own dresses/shirts/slacks and shoes unless borrowing from the team. Wondering what we have available? Visit the Members Only page to see the database.

Etiquette

Remember that you are representing not only the team but also The University of Alabama. Appropriate and polite conduct is required at competition.

WHERE TO REGISTER

Many competitions that we attend will have registration forms through Ballroom Comp Express. Other platforms will be shared by board members through an email. Please visit the Members portal for more information.
